On the Front line
The Foreign Minister has a duty to his people to be the special figure who represents the united long-term national interest to the entire outside world. And the Jewish people – with such a plurality of opinions, ideas and number of Nobel laureates – are not at all easy to represent to the vast and most often hostile to the Jews world. David copes with this function, based on the Supreme Meaning of Life and a fundamental responsibility that Jews profess. The supreme meaning of life for Jews is their alliance with Good in its battle with Evil, part of which is the daily repair of the world created by God. David gives a unique abundance of examples of statesmanship in which he realizes seemingly impossible repairs of the world. The common thread of his 49-year career is to erase the word “impossible” from his vocabulary. Just as in 1948 the Jews realized what was considered impossible in the previous 2 millennia as a Jewish state. (At the same time, a state – a technological miracle, ready to protect them against enemies a hundred times more numerous.) The Jews’ primary responsibility is to the homeland that sheltered them, as well as to all other Jews who form their virtual ancestral homeland. This responsibility is analogous to our national motto “Unity is strength”, as well as to Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, according to which “one is attacked, all are attacked”, or to the Musketeer principle “One for all, all for one!”.
